The Embassy would like to inform Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) that they may continue paying their insurance premiums or renew their membership with PhilHealth at the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration office in Manila or any PhilHealth offices nationwide personally or through their relative/representative in the Philippines.

If paying the premiums or renewing membership through a representative, such representative must have any one of the following documents:

- Work permit, work visa or employment authorization;

- Valid Overseas Employment Certificate (OEC);

- Valid job contract/certificate of Employment; or

- Any proof of being an OWF

OFWs pay a premium of P900.00 per year.

For OFWs who are not yet registered members of PhilHealth, they have to fill up the Member Data Record form or Mlb form and attach thereto a copy of their birth certificate, together with any 2 valid ID cards verification of identity, then follow the procedure outlined above.

The Philippine Embassy has been informed by the Philippine Ladies Group (PLG) Foundation that it deposited US Dollars: Four Thousand Three Hundred Ninety ($4,390.00), or Baht146,933.30 (net of bank charges), to the DSWD Foreign Donations account at the Land Bank of the Philippines, Batasan Branch, in Quezon City on 20 October 2009.

The deposit represents cash donations received by the PLG from various individuals and organizations in Thailand for the victims of Typhoon Ondoy. Of the total cash collection, Baht 60,833.00 came from the Embassy representing cash contributions received by the latter from walk-in donors.

PLG will be making another deposit in the coming days even as benevolent groups and individuals in Thailand continue to give cash and materials donations for the flood victims.

The latest cash donations received by the PLG came from the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and Pacific (UNESCAP) for Baht 92,920.00 and the Young Women’s Catholic Association (YWCA) of Bangkok for Baht 50,000.00. Several members of the YWCA called on the Philippine Ambassador on 20 October to formally hand a copy of their cash

donation.

SECOND BATCH OF DONATIONS SENT TO THE PHILIPPINES

The second batch of thirty (30) boxes of assorted donated food items and toiletries for the victims of the recent typhoons in the Philippines were sent to the Philippines last Saturday, 10 October, courtesy of the Philippine Air Lines (PAL) and with the help of SEABRA Movers, Co. The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) - Donation Facilitation Unit confirmed receipt of the boxes on 13 October 2009.

Another set of 30 boxes of assorted food items, medicines and toiletries will be sent to the Philippines today, 15 October, again courtesy of PAL and SEABRA Movers. Co., while a separate 1×20-ft container filled with assorted donated household apparel, clothes, food, and bottled water will leave Thailand for the Philippines tomorrow, 16 October 2009.

The consignee of all the above donations is the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), National Resource operation Center, at Chapel Road, Pasay City.

The Embassy reiterates that DONATIONS of used clothing will no longer be accepted. Cash donations may continue to be sent directly to the DSWD or the Philippine Ladies Group Foundation. In it you will find the number of builders coming from Chiang Mai and from the Philippines, and the days they will be working. Please help us fill in the remaining available slots (they are in yellow) by choosing the dates you can join, then email us back to let us know. The deadline for the submission of Volunteer Application Forms is on Monday, 20 October, 2009.

Donations for the Filipino group fund, in whatever amount and coming from Chiang Mai or other areas, are still very much welcome. Just reply to this message with your pledge.

Just as a reminder, the dates for the actual building of the Cory House are from November 16 to 20 (Monday to Friday), 2009. Work times will be from 8 AM to 5 PM.

Dear Kabayan,

Please allow me to tell you about a wonderful international project which directly affects the Filipino community in Thailand. Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit ecumenical Christian housing  organization building simple, decent , affordable housing in partnership with people in need. It is an international organization working to eliminate poverty housing worldwide.

To honor His Majesty the King of Thailand’s 82^nd birthday this coming December, Habitat for Humanity (HFH) will be building 82 houses in the Sansai District of Chiang Mai in November. (You might be able to catch their advertisement on some local TV channels, usually at the top of the hour.) That project in itself is already noble. But one significant piece of information that will interest the Filipino community in Thailand is that one of those 82 houses will be dedicated to our very own former president, the late Corazon Aquino. This is in recognition of and in gratitude for her support to HFH projects in the past. Is that not amazing??

As Filipinos in Thailand, we are deeply honored by this gesture of HFH. I am therefore calling on ALL Filipinos in Thailand, especially here in Chiang Mai, to support this project by participating as a VOLUNTEER to build the Cory House. As a Filipino volunteer, you will be joining thousands of other volunteers coming from all over the world, to be led by former US Pres. Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter along with Thai volunteers, who will be working together for five consecutive days. The idea is for 15 volunteers to work for 5 days to build one house.

Kabayan, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to participate in a project that brings honor to Filipinos in Thailand. Since Habitat for Humanity has extended this noble gesture of dedicating one house to our beloved Cory Aquino, it is only fitting that the Cory House should be built by Filipino hands. Will you participate and support this great endeavor?

Your donation will help defray expenses for volunteers’ transportation to the site, food, kit and some other logistics expenses in connection with the project. Foreign volunteers spend for their air fare, accommodations and other incidental expenses plus some donation to building the houses. Pres. Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter have given one week of their time every year building houses for the poor with Habitat for Humanity for the last 24 years.

Instead of the individual registration fee, the Filipinos in Thailand can give a group donation. This arrangement will make it possible for a good number to volunteer and for all Filipinos to participate, albeit by different means. Firstly, there is an urgent need for 15 Filipinos to work for every one of the 5 working days. From a practical point of view, those 15 volunteers should come from Chiang Mai, unless some of our kababayans from other provinces wish to join the build. But the rest of the Filipino community in other parts of Thailand can still support this Blitz Build by contributing to the fund we are raising for the ‘Cory Aquino House’.

In short, I am appealing to you, my dear kababayan, to participate in this by being one of the volunteer builders of the Cory House, or, if you cannot be a volunteer builder, by sending in your cash support. Any amount you contribute will be welcome, but the important thing is that at the end of the day, it would be nice if all of us Filipinos here in Thailand can proclaim “I helped build the one and only Cory Aquino House in Chiang Mai”.

The Cory House, along with the other 81 houses to be built during the Blitz Build, will be awarded to previously selected Thai families who have contributed a ’sweat equity’ of over 400 hours. Again, this is a rare opportunity for the Filipino community to give back to our host country. Will it not be a proud moment for us to be able to say that we have reciprocated the hospitality of Thailand by supporting this effort to build decent housing for the needy in this area?

Kabayan, let us please join hands to ensure the success of this noble project. If you are based in Chiang Mai and are willing to volunteer as a builder or help with other tasks, please attend the Orientation and Registration Meeting at 5:00 PM (not 2 PM as previously announced) on Wednesday, 14 October 2009 at Mabuhay Restaurant, Nimmanaheminda Road, Chiang Mai.
